The room is large and hollow and shaped something like a rectangle. A daunting plain red curtain acts as a backdrop for a small wood-stained stage. Rows of chairs are filled with eyes and ears intensely focused on the ensuing performance. The PA system is crisp, and every sound — ranging from clapping to sneezing to tiny and not-so-tiny mistakes — is heard. And then there's the clock.

Facing the stage, small in size but gigantic in stature, its second hands shine directly into the hearts, souls and fears of those who dare brave the sensory overload that is the tenbyten Performance Lab. It's like a disapproving mother reminding her child that this bedroom needs to be clean before they leave or there will be no cake for dessert.

Ten minutes might not sound like a long time, but for the artists who participate in the tenbyten Performance Lab, which takes place the first Wednesday of each month at Koo's Art Center in the East Village Arts District in Long Beach, a dozen would be two too many.

Koo's Art Center vs. City of Long Beach III looked to be a rematch worth watching when the sides faced off in the City Council chambers last Tuesday night over granting the art and music center a permanent live entertainment permit. In the first bout, back in January 2004, supporters of the art and music center on Broadway near Linden Avenue packed the house to fight for a live entertainment license in the face of opposition from the Long Beach Police Department, which cited noise...
