Personally, the kitchen is my favourite room in the house. I’ve always thought the kitchen is the heart of the home and I think this form of interior design really makes the most of this idea by making it appear light and bright whilst also being welcoming and homely!
So, how do you make your kitchen look shabby chic without it looking outdated or old fashioned? Hopefully, the simple steps below will show you how!
Incorporate white or cream tiles into your design for a clean and easy to maintain kitchen. Alternatively, for a more country home feel, use pale wooden flooring throughout the space. For a more cost effective alternative to wooden flooring, consider a wood-effect laminate flooring – at a fraction of the price, it can create a similar, more homely feel. Add a traditional style rug in the seating area of your kitchen to separate the space and make it appear warmer and more inviting.
Use paint or tiles in a pastel shade of yellow, green, blue or pink to create the foundations of a delicate looking, shabby chic kitchen. Don’t be afraid to mix colours! As long as they are pastel shades, you can incorporate colour in any way to reflect your personal tastes.
Use roughly painted, white cupboard doors with a natural, wooden worktop to create the shabby chic style. In a similar way to the flooring, a laminate worktop can be used in place of real wood as a much cheaper (and less maintenance!) alternative. Try and keep it traditional in terms of the style of doors and the style of handles in order to produce a truly shabby chic styled kitchen.
Include elegant, French reproduction or vintage furniture into the design of your kitchen. Use furniture that is cream, white or painted in a complimentary colour to those used in the new design of your shabby chic kitchen. Use furniture that is roughly painted to create a shabby look – don’t be afraid to give it a go yourself if you have any old furniture that you want to upcycle!
Dress your shabby kitchen with vintage appliances in pastel shades and introduce cute, country kitchen accessories such as cake stands, decorative plates and country style bunting. Dress your kitchen up as much or as little as you like within this style so to reflect your personal design tastes.
